Leave a Bequest

John Flynn had a dream of bringing a ‘Mantle of Safety’ to the people of the Australian Outback. Hugh Victor Mackay shared this dream and, with a generous gift in his Will, helped Flynn turn the dream into reality. After first ensuring that your family’s needs are met in your Will, you might want to consider making a bequest to the life-saving work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The John Flynn Legion

As a way of recognising and honouring your decision to become a part of the history of the Flying Doctors by leaving a gift in your Will for future generations, we have established an honour society called The John Flynn Legion.
There are no charges or obligations attached to becoming a member of the Legion.
All you have to do is advise us that you have provided a gift to the RFDS in your Will.
By leaving a gift in your will to the Flying Doctor,  your generousity will ensure that we continue to bring essential medical care to the people who live, work or travel in outback and rural Australia.

Join the John Flynn Society

People who leave a bequest in their will, large or small, to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria are vitally important to us. As a special way of saying thank you to these supporters, whose lasting legacy will help us continue providing our health services, we have formed The John Flynn Society.

Some people leave a bequest because they wish they could do more for an organisation they respect. Others have benefited personally, or their loved ones have been helped by this service, and they do not want to leave this world without showing their gratitude.

By including the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria in your Will, many lives will be saved in your memory and what an amazing legacy that is.

Where your legacy goes

  • Funding is always needed to purchase vital medical equipment, keep the doctor flying and provide essential health services.
  • By leaving a bequest, you enable aircraft to be equipped and maintained during its 20 years of service, then upgraded as and when required, as well as support our many services.
  • You will help save lives.

How to leave a Bequest

When making a bequest to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria, we suggest that the below wording is used. This same wording can be used as a Codicil to an existing Will. A Codicil is a supplement to a Will, containing an addition, explanation or modification of something in the Will.

I, (insert your name here) give, devise and bequeath to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (Victoria) in the State of Victoria for its general purposes, free of all duties, the following (then use whichever is applicable below):

  • % of my estate (provide percentage amount)
  • The residue of my estate
  • The sum of $ (provide amount)
  • Life Insurance Policy number (provide information)
  • Property (provide details)
  • Other (please explain fully)

and I direct that the receipt of the Chairman or other proper officer of the Service shall be sufficient discharge to the Executor for the bequest.

We recommend you always consult your solicitor.

Welcome to The John Flynn Society

The John Flynn Society exists to acknowledge and thank you now, during your lifetime, for the legacy you have planned. John Flynn Society members are presented with a framed certificate, a lapel badge and RFDS engraved pen. Functions will be held from time to time so you and other members can see some of the operations your bequests will go on supporting.

Leave a legacy that saves lives

What is a bequest?

A bequest is a gift in a Will. The Royal Flying Doctor Service is aware of the need to look after your family, however after providing for loved ones you may wish to make a gift to an organisation such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

You may have been one of our patients, or know someone who was. You may want to do something to help people who live or work beyond the immediate reach of specialist hospitals and health services or you may want to help us to expand the range of services we can currently offer. The gift you plan today will help us to provide ever-improving aeromedical and clinic services to future generations.

Why make a Will?

A Will is a legal document containing details of your wishes regarding distribution of your estate after your death. By making a valid Will you can ensure that your wishes are clear and will be upheld under law.

Seeking the right advice

Writing a Will is a very personal matter and involves decisions that need to be informed and comfortable for the person making them. It is recommended that you obtain expert advice from a legal practitioner to ensure that your Will is correctly worded and consistent with your wishes. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need financial planning advice before making a decision about the distribution of property in your Will.

As a special way of saying thank you to these supporters, whose lasting legacy will help us continue our health service, we have formed the Companions of the RFDS Alliance.

As a symbol of the significance of this decision we include your name in our Memorial Book which is permanently on display in the Board Room at our Brisbane Base. As a member you will receive invitations to various events, our quarterly magazine and a small thank you pack.

If you have already included the RFDS (Queensland Section) in your will, please inform us; we would like the opportunity to thank you personally and to include you in the Companions of the RFDS Alliance.

On behalf of everyone at the Flying Doctor and those who are assisted by us everyday, thank you for your kindness, generosity and foresight.

Your concern for the future welfare of those Queenslanders assisted by the RFDS is admirable.

Please seek legal advice

We recommend that you seek advice from a solicitor to ensure that the wording of your will reflects your exact wishes. It is important to remember to review your will regularly, particularly when life circumstances change.

Types of bequests and example wording

There are three main types of bequests you can leave to the Flying Doctor and are as follows:

1. Specific bequest

This is usually where you name a specific asset to be left to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) in your will.

An example of the correct wording for this type of gift is:
‘I GIVE, FREE OF ALL DUTIES AND TAXES the amount of $.... or my units/shares in ……………… Trust/Ltd, or my real property situated at [insert street address] having the title reference ……….. to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) ABN 80 009 663 478 of 12 Casuarina Street, Brisbane Airport, QLD 4008. The receipt of the treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is an absolute discharge to my executor.’

2. Residual bequest

This is a bequest where, after you have provided for your loved ones, you leave the residue of your Estate to the RFDS (Queensland Section) in your will.

An example of the correct wording for this type of gift is:
‘I GIVE, FREE OF ALL DUTIES AND TAXES the residue of my estate (or ....% of the residue of my Estate) to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) ABN 80 009 663 478 of 12 Casuarina Street, Brisbane Airport, QLD 4008. The receipt of the treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is an absolute discharge to my executor.’

3. Percentage bequest

Through this method you can nominate to leave a specified percentage of your total Estate to the RFDS (Queensland Section) in your will.

An example of the correct wording for this type of gift is:
‘I GIVE, FREE OF ALL DUTIES AND TAXES ….% of my Estate to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) ABN 80 009 663 478 of 12 Casuarina Street, Brisbane Airport, QLD 4008. The receipt of the treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is an absolute discharge to my executor.’
